There already is such a thing. The "usermode" package in Red Hat
includes a "consolehelper" tool that popups a window asking for the root
password whenever a gui program that requires root privilegies is
started.

AFAIK Ximian also uses part of that code for a similar dialog for their
update utilities on non-Red Hat platforms.

But it's a good point; maybe it should be included with GNOME.
