Yes, there is that... the important distinction with alerts is that
their appearance (or non-appearance) should normally be controlled by
the user's preferences... which is probably worth mentioning in the
style guide as well.  

(For example, I get hundreds of email messages a day, so the last thing
I need is a window popping up every time something arrives-- I prefer a
sound or a desktop icon change).
