Look into "xalf".  It does this in one of three ways (you pick what you
want):

  1. pointer changes to hourglass
  2. 'invisible' window appears (so that there's a placeholder in the
     task list)
  3. splash window appears

Currently, Star Office isn't a gnome app.  :)
