I know mp3s (and many other sound file types) usually carry information
like genre artist and so forth. Why not display this information when a
sound file is selected?

Some kind of oscilloscope view of sound files can be recognized. At least
when the user becomes familiar with them.
I used to run a radio program when the *old fashion* LP's was in common
use.
When you looked at the cut you know how you should make the intro.
Looking at a vinyl disc is not very inuitive I gess. If something better is
made, for example a colored Fourier analysis overlaid with the sound
envelope, it would be far more easy to recognize the sound. In fact you can
read spoken words right out of something like that with a bit of training.
There should be a cursor inside the view too..
