AFAIK nobody is working on the GNOME file manager (which is responsible
for the icons). Everybody is working on Nautilus now
(nautilus.eazel.com). But if you really want to, go to www.gnome.org/mc
and download the .tar.gz, and take a look at the source, and add it.

This is something that the window manager is responsible. SawFish
(ex-Sawmill) does not got that problem, and its faster. I assume you
Window Manager is Enlightenment. Enlightenment is very slow when used
togheter with GNOME. So I guess you should just move to Sawmill. Check
freshmeat or gnome.org to find out where to get it. Or if you use Helix
GNOME (www.helixcode.com) it comes with it. I think you should move to
helix anyway, since its very cool, and the original GNOME authors work
there.
