Maybe when you select files to do something, you "freeze selection". When
you want to do something, you "move here selection" or "copy here
selection". That way you preselect files, and when you want to do something,
you do it.

Add commands to "add to selection", "clear selection", "show selection" and
some more and you have a powerfull thing.

The reasons:
You select first, and in as many places as you want/need.
You can see the selection (a small window with a list?).
When you decide what to do, you do it (side effect: nice one selection -
multiple copy).

I think it like a smart clipboard (no cut until needed, just select).
