I don't think that does what the person who asked the original
question wanted. When you maximize the apps in question under MS
Windows, they change to the exact size of the screen but remain a
normal window which may stack above or below others, they don't merge
into the desktop. Running apps in the root window is a different,
although also possibly interesting, idea.
