What's interesting is that I understand exactly what you're talking about.
I can memorize a map in Final Fantasy without too much problem(2D overhead
map), but give me a 3D map from the first person and I get miserably lost.

What Microsoft is going to do, though, is add incredible amounts of fluff to
the 2D interface.  You might think this is bad or good, but let me tell you,
there are some pretty spiffy UI minds over at Microsoft, and things like:

--3D animated desktop backgrounds
--Windows that scale down right in front of you onto the taskbar/minbar(I'm
SURE Microsoft is going to implement something like my Minbar sooner or
later!)
--Animations that are actually SMOOTH, who knows, probably even SILCy
--Deleting a file causes it to shatter and break into pieces, etc.

I mean, if sexy interfaces didn't matter, why does E rule?
