I agree to the first sentence, but I think you got the following two
the wrong way around.  Motif uses to much whitespace, just look at the
menu bars.  Many GTK apps use too little whitespace, like using to
small interior padding in buttons.

I also think that buttons should not be expanded.  This makes the
buttons look like something that is not a button anymore.
