Re: [gnome-flashback] Future of Gnome Flashback

I'm hoping that MATE will be actively developed for many years to come,
but I'm afraid that it won't be as active as upstream GNOME.

Upstream GNOME doesn't properly support clients with slow CPUs and without 3D graphics drivers. Nor Xorg over the network (thin clients).
We have many thousands of those.

So I think there's a gap there that needs to be filled: something close to upstream GNOME that doesn't require 3D.
Gnome-flashback currently fills that.
The fact that it's also providing the old desktop paradigm is an additional bonus, but not a hard requirement for me.

I do hope gnome-flashback will continue to exist at least until
(1) we have only a few hundred such clients, so that we can afford to throw them away - maybe in 5-10 years, or (2) upstream GNOME starts supporting clients without 3D, or (3) another DE emerges that supports clients without 3D and is good+light enough - possibly Unity 8 or LXDE-qt...

Thanks to all,
Alkis
