Hello everybody,

My name is Radina and I have been collaborating with the
Getting Things GNOME! project  with the desire to apply for 2012 GNOME Outreach Program for Women internship. Marina Zhurakhinskaya suggested (please read the conversation bellow for all the details) that given that I am most interested in working on the GTG User Documentation, it would be best to count on someone from the GNOME Documentation team as a co-mentor for the GOPW program.

I have already prepared the Topic Outline for the GTG User Documentation (see the attached document) and I am waiting for more feedback from the developer group while learning Mallard. That part is precisely why would I need a co-mentor from someone from your group. I would love to hear your input regarding the attached topic outline and, if possible, some recommended resources for working with Mallard (a part from Project Mallard page that I am already using). My plan would be to have at least the the guide index.page and the topic pages of the first level ready before I submit my application.

During the internship I would first concentrate on producing a quality
User Documentation for Getting Things GNOME, but once that task is done, I would love to continue to work on documenting other GNOME applications whose user docs need rewriting, editing or translating to Mallard format.

Looking forward to hearing from you... :)

Regards,
Radina Matic

Hi Marina,

Thank you for your email and the information, it will sure help us all.

I agree that considering what I would mostly like to do, that being the documentation for GTG, it will probably be best to have some kind of joint Docs & GTG mentorship where I could count on subject-matter expertise from various GTG developers, together with somebody from the Documentation team for writing, editing & technical questions regarding Mallard. I don't really care which one of them is going to be the official mentor, they all seem pretty cool to me... :)

Even though I would like to concentrate on GTG documentation as my main project, if time allows it I would not mind taking additional documentation tasks after it. I will forward our conversation to the mentors of the documentation team to get their input.

Thanks again for your help!

Regards,
Radina

Hi Radina!

Thank you for your interest in GNOME and OPW! It would be great to have you apply for the program!

It's expected that an intern would collaborate with multiple community members anyway, so it doesn't matter if you have one or two mentors. However, you can definitely have official co-mentors if people are most comfortable with that arrangement. It's expected that a mentor would answer the intern's questions within a day or so, and is available to discuss things with the intern on IRC at least couple times a week. However, in some cases the mentor can just direct you to another community member who might be most knowledgeable for helping you with your task or be more available.

If you are interested in applying to work on documentation, you should also talk to the documentation team folks, and perhaps you can consider working on documenting other projects, in addition to GTG, during your internship. You can find out who they are on the Mentors page. As you can see there are many other applications that need documentation too: https://live.gnome.org/DocumentationProject/Tasks/ApplicationHelp

So perhaps, it would work out best if you have one mentor from GTG as the main project whose documentation you would focus on and another mentor from the documentation team.

You might also like to look at the GNOME marketing project. Though it sounds like you would be most interested in applying to work on documentation, you can see if there are some ways you would like to help out with GNOME marketing as you go along.

Izidor, Lionel, Bertrand, you are definitely welcome to add yourself as mentors for GTG on https://live.gnome.org/GnomeLove/Mentors and let me know if you have any questions about the outreach program.

Radina, you to please feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions about the program!

Thanks!
Marina

Subject: contribution to GTG project and GOPW

Hi,

Recently I have been collaborating with the Getting Things GNOME project by translating the GUI into Spanish, Italian and Catalan, and by suggesting some more general GUI usability improvements. I like the project very much and I want to contribute further so I was thinking of applying for the 2012 GNOME Outreach Program for Women internships with a User Documentation writing project and some community management for Getting Things GNOME.

However, even though he is listed as a mentor for the GTG project , Luca Invernizzi seems to be unavailable at present, and I have been in contact with the rest of developers to see if anybody is interested in becoming a GOPW mentor for my collaboration with the GTG. They all seem enthusiastic about my present contributions and possible future collaboration, but not being very familiar with the GOPW program, they are unsure about the specific mentoring duties and, more importantly, time commitment that the mentoring would entail. I must admit I am curious about it myself - I know that interns commit to a 40 hours working week during which they are required to be available on the IRC channel, but how often is a mentor required to "check" on them? Daily? Once a week? Could the mentoring responsibilities be shared by more than one developer? That might help considering their busy schedules...

It would be great if you could reply to all of us with some more details regarding the above questions. I am very interested in continuing my collaboration with the GTG project while participating in GNOME Outreach Program for Women this year, and I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Radina Matic
