For reference, I found them in
/etc/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.xml

No need. A quick perl script that would give XML
experts a nightmare, and hey presto, a DocBook
variable list :)

That's useful to know. I'll add that to the layouts
tab bit.

I'm not sure about which layout is considered the
default one, for which the light does not show.
It looks like it's the top one in the list in the
Layouts tab.
But that has checkboxes that let you specify the
default -- but they don't work.

I'll digest the rest of it later today & I might have
a few more questions before I put it all in the user
guide.
