Please any tutorial on how to edit an actual documentation?

I want to work in documentation the gnome-db project, but I don't now
how to begin.

I try to edit the files in doc:

../doc/C/xml

for a specific one like gda-value.xml, but when I recompile and
re-install the software any change is made.

Then, exist any tutorial I can follow to begin editing the
documentation, and wich are the software I need to work with the
documentation?
