PNG images

Hi!
While trying to convert balsa.sgml to balsa.xml, I'm wondering what to
do with these errors:
validity error: Value "png" for attribute format on graphic is not among the enumerated set
<graphic fileref="images/balsa_logo" format="png" srccredit="tigert"></graphic>
They occur for each graphic there is in the document. Why isn't png a
valid format for a graphic? Should I use an alternative?
