Tooting my own trumpet, another way of doing it and achieving this is by
using GARNOME. It downloads and installs released tarballs, and I personally
test them (it's a distribution, not a random-updater-from-cvs), so you can
be fairly sure they work well.
Currently builds from the snapshot also released today.
