Look in nautilus/components/help/help-method.c
I believe it's looking in /usr/info and/or /usr/local/info for the info
files. I've not worked on the man files - not sure where it's picking 'em
up.

Try putting gdiskfree.xml in prefix/share/gnome/help/gdiskfree/C/ and then
type help:gdiskfree. This has been working for me. (FYI - the xml files
have some differences from sgmls. At this point we're sticking to sgml -
hope to make the jump to xml at some point soon, but the tools for docs
writing are not mature enough to make the leap yet. As far as I know, the xml
renders exactly the same as the sgml in all important respects right now,
but one of the things we're still sorting out is the differences between the
two.)
I'm afraid I'm at a loss as to why the tree is not displaying correctly on
yours, but this is definitely something we need to sort out. :)
Cheers,
John
