I'm not exactly sure how Guikachu works, but for gIDE the most basic
thing you can do is write a control to view the mime type of the file
its stores its data for a project in. gIDE will just query and presto.
The widget callback stuff you are talking about requires somewhat of a
plugin approach, as the plugin can access the editor to manipulate the
text. There isn't really a document on such a thing but there is a
sample plugin. I'd be interested to hear of an interface augmentation
you might need because the gnome-db people are also looking at this type
of thing.
