For what it is worth this behaviour is useful although I'm a little
skeptical of the proposed implementation which sounds complicated to use.
I achieved a similar result in Microsoft Windows by searching for all the
files in the current directory (by hitting Ctrl+F). This gives a list of
the contents of the directory and subdirectories and when I'm done I close
the search or move back to a standard view.

Do more recent versions of Nautilus still not include a find/search tool?
(I'm using quite an old version of Nautilus.)
