Ok, I've since discovered that actually gnome-moz-remote works just
fine and does exactly what it's supposed to, but unfortunately,
galeon does not apparently support the Netscape remote startup
protocol (though mozilla does). That makes it a galeon problem, and
no longer on topic for this list.
Many thanks for the people who gave me the useful pointers on that
one, as well as how to make mailto URLs do the right thing with
emacs.
I'm still thinking about the /dev/dsp simulation problem (if that's
the right solution), the remote operation version of this (though I'm
told that esd supports it in principle).
