The problem is that while it is a very nice application, it is not at all
designed as a comprehensive media framework. My observation would be that
it seems to be mostly evolving as the needs of the application drive it,
rather than being thought out to solve the problems that technologies like
MS DirectShow solve.

Sometimes making things generic isn't the right thing, especially in apps
where real-time processing is involved. I'm certainly not the one to blame
you for creating things the way you did, and I think there are some very
interesting design ideas involved in it that could be useful, but I don't
think that the implementation as-is is very useful.
