An appropriate question, too!

Threading is a technology that enables developers to structure their programs 
in a particular way.  It really is an enabling (and if used correctly) a 
simplifying technique.

The bottom line is sort of a duh answer:  "It empowers people."

It also protects you from wasting all that time finding out where that bug is 
in a threaded program that uses gnome-libs.  This is what we old-duh-ers call, 
"protection from future-duh."
