Unless this bug is fixed, 3.0.0 won't work for me.  For now, I've downgraded from 2.99.5 to 2.99.3 which does not exhibit the problem.

Somebody needs to decide when we are going to stabilize the API for some
3.0.0 releases. I am quite confident that we can do that soon.

So, I suggest:
Wednesday March 7th, 2007: API/ABI freeze.
Wednesday March 21st, 2007: 3.0.0 releases.

An extra API will be in 3.2.0. That will be parallel-installable if
really necessary, but we will try to just have API/ABI additions.

We might want to add some padding to some structs to make
ABI-compatibility easier.
