[gnome-db] UTF8-Error

When trying to start gnome with gdm I get the error:

[invalid UTF8] gnome-daemon could not be started

And gnome will not start.

After stopping gdm I'm able to start gnome with startx as desired.

Where to look next? What might cause this behavior?
