glib/libcharset issues

Ok guys, not necessarily a gnome issue (not yet at least), but i'm 
working on trying to build GTK+2 in OS X.  When i build libglib-2.0.1a, 
configure runs fine (after installing libiconv and gettext from source) 
but make fails and gives the following message... apparently something 
wrong with libiconv/libcharset because that's where it fails, something 
about multiple definitions of various symbols.

/usr/bin/libtool: internal link edit command failed
make[3]: *** [libglib-2.0.la] Error 1
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

Is this a known issue, can it be easily fixed?  I'm trying to avoid Fink 
at this point, but would i really be better off by using it to install 
GTK+2?

Also, are there any more resources online about getting GTK+ and 
ultimately Gnome running on X on OS X.?
