I mentioned in an earlier posting on the e-gymraeg list the possibility of a
"dictionary server", which could be set up in any appropriate context (eg an
office), and used to provide central access to lexical resources. I've just
posted there to say that as a proof
of concept, I have now put together a basic dictionary server, and loaded it
initially with over 5,000 Welsh words. Both the interface software (GPLed)
and the dictionary are available for free download.
The dictionary itself (Aurfa) is at http://www.dotmon.com/aurfa, and currently
includes items from from Termau Addysgol and Arwyddion Dwyeithog, published
by Bwrdd yr Iaith, and available in PDF format from its site, and an initial
tranche of 200 terms from Y Termiadur Ysgol, published by ACCAC (for reasons
best known to themselves, ACCAC have refused to make Termiadur available in
digital format).
Ideally, something like this should be taken forward officially (Bwrdd yr
Iaith), since this would be likely to get faster movement on extending the
coverage, but I'm not sure how realistic it is to expect this.
The interface software (Krowbar) is at http://www.kdonnelly.com/krowbar, and
is a development of the Omnivore section of KGyfieithu
(http://www.kyfieithu.co.uk). A forum is also available there for support
issues.
Now, back to KDE fuzzies over Christmas ....
