You could already do this with the current "it would be cool if we had it"
features, no need for new ones:)

User selects Gnumeric spreadsheet region and clicks Edit/Copy
User switches to AbiWord and clicks Edit/Paste As...
User selects image/svg(?) from the list of MIME types Gnumeric supports
AbiWord resolves the clipboard moniker to PersistStream and saves it into
an image/svg stream, displays it via the SVG viewer component and saves it
in a stream of the compound document storage.
