This really isn't for legacy purposes; it's for interoperability, and
will continue to be required to work and work _reliably_ and _well_
for the foreseeable interesting timeframe. There is no way we are
shipping GNOME 2 without the ability to reliably paste to
Mozilla/Qt/xterm/etc. and also from those.
We must _seamlessly_ and _automatically_ work with X in _both
directions_ _without race conditions_ and _ICCCM compliant_, as a
non-negotiable design requirement, IMHO. I would strongly oppose use
of any API in GNOME that didn't do this.

It will need a full-blown plan for working 100% (not "most of the
time") before we can even consider recommending the Bonobo clipboard
API over the X clipboard. Clipboard screwups and cut/copy/paste not
working is one of the most common gripes on gnome-list and bugzilla.
Maybe this is a good chance to try out the RFP process. But the Bonobo
clipboard had better not start showing up in the GNOME 2 platform or
apps without solving the interoperability issue, or I will whine. A
lot. More than you can stand. ;-)
IMHO,
Havoc
