Sending VCGT data to wide gamut monitors using i2c?

I'm pondering adding i2c-encoding functionality to GCM to allow us to
reprogram the external panel gamma ramps, rather than using X. Using X
has the disadvantage of lowering the number of colors we can display,
as we artificially have to limit the gamut range when setting the VCGT
tag. Changing this on the monitor itself gives us the advantage of not
lowing the gamut range, as it's hopefully operating later in the
analog chain.

Ideas and feedback welcome. If anyone has ever tried this before, I
would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
