gnome cvs update faulty ?

I've had a number of cases where I haven't picked up changes in cvs
head, leading to compile or link errors.. deleting the whole module and
checking it out again has invariably fixed the problem. This is my
update command for example libgsf :-

cvs -d :pserver:anonymous anoncvs gnome org/cvs/gnome  -Q  update -dP
libgsf

Am I doing something stoopid or is this a known problem ?
