(Resending this as I wasn't subscribed before and I think my message
didn't make it through)

I've installed Boxes through the AUR on an up-to-date Arch system.
Whenever I try to start up a VM, it works for a moment, then the display
goes away and I'm left with a blank starting screen again.

These seem to be the relevant lines of Console output:

(gnome-boxes:23968): Boxes-CRITICAL **: boxes_spice_display_construct:
assertion '(_tmp0_ != 0) || (_tmp1_ != 0)' failed

Boxes-Message: machine.vala:149: display ubuntu-14 disconnected

I recall that ubuntu was shipping a broken version of QXL driver so
thats likely it. There could also be issues with libvirt or qemu but
to be sure this is not an issue in Boxes itself, you can try launching
the same machine in virt-manager (You'll have to add session
connection to it: virt-manager -c qemu+unix:///session).
