Re: Gnome desktop environment defect.

Hi Allan:
Thanks for your reply.
But I am using Gnome 2.28.2 which still use Compiz as window and composite manager.
However, if I do xinerama, X server composite extension will be closed.
When I restart X server, Compiz can not start up and there is no window manager at all.

Further thinking on this problem, whose should be responsible for the fallback mechanism
to detect such kind of failure and start the back up window manager, Gnome itself or certain
OS distributor?

I have tried on Ubuntu10.10, it can fallback to metacity automatically.

thanks.

Best Regards

Kevin

Are you using GNOME 3.x? If so, yep, GNOME 3.x doesn't use Compiz. Instead, it has Clutter as its window and compositing manager so things will break if you run compiz

Dear Kevin,

As no one has answered your email most likely no one knew what to say ;-)

From my perspective GNOME has moved to release 3.x and no longer supports Compiz. Only your distribution will issue patches to support old releases of GNOME and therefore they are a better source of support.

Now from the time I was using GNOME+Compiz, when compiz failed GNOME would revert to metacity. So i feel this was already addresses and maybe could be another bug on your system.

Dear Gnome masters:

I recently did xinerama on my PC with RHEL6.0(X server 1.7.7),
configured Xinerama on the top of Compiz as the following precudure:
1. connect 2 displays to my ATI 4800 graphics card
2. open Compiz as the composite desktop manager.
3. open Xinerama from the Catalyst control center and gdm restart

After the restart, windows have no decoration and mouse use X server
default theme.
I psed and find, there is no window manager at all. Further
investigation on this is that when Xinerama is opened and X server
composite
extension is force closed. Compiz fails if composite extension failed.
That is why there is no window manager once Xinerama is enabled.

So I am thinking that, under gnome desktop environment, if the user
configured window manager as Compiz, and Compiz fails for any
reason, gnome should have some fallback mechanism to use another window
manager.

I plan to file a bug on the bugzilla about this problem.

Kevin
