Re: Cool project: building slides on how to get started with pygtk

A friend of mine pointed me to http://www.pygtk.org/pygtk2tutorial/index.html which is a good reference.

The purpose of our 'exercise' is to be able to engage with an audience in 45/60 minutes (30minutes ?) and show them the simplicity of PyGtk to entice them to give it a try.

Maybe we can have a short (30min) and long(60min) version?

Ok. so maybe we can start looking at a cool idea for a first program,
maybe something simple BUT useful too, and using some standard GTK
elements (or allowing for extensions - lesson 2-3-4...).

What could our app be doing...?

Thanks Fred for sending this out. Although I've made two fairly simple
apps
on the Maemo platform before, I am still only a very beginner in the
grounds
of PyGtk programming or even GNOME itself. If anyone has experience in
PyGtk
programming, especially on the points that Fred suggested in his e-mail,
please share with us in this mailing list so that we can work on this
collaboratively.

Thanks you all in advance.

Dear all,

I'd like to follow up with the discussion the GNOME.Asia committee had
on Tuesday evening with some members of Hong Kong, Indonesia and India.

Amanda started the idea that letting new developers now how easy it is
to write applications using PyGTK would help GNOME attract new
developers. We actually think this is a great idea and would be useful
not only at the Asian level, but at the general GNOME level everywhere
around the world.

Amanda has accepted to drive the initiative but help is definitely
welcome. Some of the issues to be covered are:
- ease of development
- tools, IDEs
- cross-platform, portability

I think it could be a great project to boost activity on this mailing
list as well and we could use the GNOME wiki to start adding notes and
comments.

If anyone has comments or suggestions, please reply to this email.

Thank you.

Fred
