GNOME Summary August 15-22

This is the GNOME Summary for August 15-August 22.

Note that I've enhanced the web site for the summary, see
http://developer.gnome.org/news/summary/ - there are also summary archives
there. This is a fun way to read your GNOME Summary.

 1)  New Status Page

--------------------------------------------------------------

I made a status page to track our current releases and main GNOME focuses.
You can find it at:

   http://developer.gnome.org/news/status

There are some interesting links from this page to status reports from
project maintainers. One of the most interesting is...

 2)  File Manager Status Report

--------------------------------------------------------------

Ettore gave us an extensive file manager status update, look here:

  http://developer.gnome.org/news/status/fm.html

==============================================================

 3) Crazy out of control window manager influx

--------------------------------------------------------------

Two new GNOME window manager candidates appeared this week:

Sawmill:

  http://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~john/sw/sawmill/index.html

wmG:

  http://ductape.net/~reeve/projects.html

The other possibilities still exist: Alfredo is adding to WindowMaker
for us, and Jay Painter's gnome-wm in CVS. A hacked WindowMaker looks
like the fastest way to get a fully-functional and stable window
manager in the near future. But some of these other projects may be
nice over the longer term. We'll see how it goes; you can never have
too many window managers. :-)

==============================================================

 4)  Gnotices

--------------------------------------------------------------

We made a site using the Slashdot-like Squishdot engine to display
GNOME developer news; this site may eventually be a rich source of
GNOME Summary items. :-) Unfortunately we are having DNS and firewall
issues, so the site will be down right this minute, but if you keep
trying during the week it will be up eventually:

  http://news.gnome.org

==============================================================

 5) New gnome-libs and control center

--------------------------------------------------------------

We released gnome-libs 1.0.14; 1.0.13 appeared for a short time, but
had a mistakenly-changed soname for libart_lgpl so was immediately
withdrawn. Please upgrade to 1.0.14 and delete the libart_lgpl.so.2
symlink from your library directory if you happened to download
1.0.13.

The new control center release has bugfixes, and a reworked
ui-properties capplet.

==============================================================

 6) New draft of window manager spec

--------------------------------------------------------------

Marko Macek (of icewm fame) posted the latest draft of the GNOME/KDE
window manager spec to the window manager spec mailing list. Read it
here:

  http://www.gnome.org/mailing-lists/archives/wm-spec-list/1999-August/0014.shtml

gnome-libs bugfixes were pouring in this week. A new Scrabble game
appeared, from Tom Gilbert. GTK+ is gearing up for a 1.2.4 release,
which should appear soon. James Henstridge seems to have added circuit
objects to the Dia diagram editor. George is back from Czech (I think)
and checking in lots of stuff, including gnome-libs
documentation. Various tweaks and enhancements were applied to the
panel, applets, and control center. Federico is fixing lots of gmc
bugs. Elliot checked in a gnome-java module, with a start on Java
bindings (help is probably accepted on these).
