building gnome from scratch

Hi all,

I need to update gnome on enterprise linux, and since it seems nearly impossible to find all the requisite rpms, is there a good way to build gnome from scratch?

I have tried jhbuild and garnome in the past without success.

Alternatively, is it more effective (safer) to pull all the srpms and just go through the process of building them and resolving the dependencies along the way?
