See the recent thread on "pure gtk+2 programs. An alternative to passing the "gtk-module" argument from the command line is to add the following environment setting:

GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge

There's a patch floating around which automatically adds this setting in gnome-session if assistive technology support is turned on at startup time, but I think the Sun JDS gnome distro is the only one currently shipping with this patch.
