building gnopernicus cvs - automake version

Hello,
I'm trying to build gnopernicus from cvs.  I have automake 1.7.7 on my
system.  Autogen.sh seems to be looking for version 1.4.  Why doesn't it
attempt to detect a newer version?  

Any ideas on how to get around this problem?
