I found this information useful.

I just have one further question.

Something appears to be wrong with my X installation, in that once the X
server is running, I cannot execute an application and get it to start, I
keep getting errors from GTK saying it cannot contact the display.  I
gather I have to set the DISPLAY variable, but how am I supposed to find
out what this is supposed to be?

Using Slackware 9.0.
