Could you please post your startx script to the list?  It looks to me as
though something is going seriously wrong with your gnome startup.

'startx' is not the usual means of starting GNOME these days (for us
GUI-types), so you may be either exposing underlying bugs or assumptions
in gnome-session, or something could be wrong with your startx script. 
I believe that "gnome-session" ought to be the first command run after
the X server starts, but I could be mistaken.
