runtime errors

I am sorry to say that my previous posts containing output from
my "startx" command were not accurate. I stupidly omitted the
"dot" in front of my "xinitrc" filename, so I was not actually
executing the xinitrc commands I thought I was!!! My system
retrieved a default gnome xinitrc from a previous installation of
gnome instead!!!
But I fixed that and still have a problem, this time the
associated error messages truly reflect what I ran, which was:
---------- xinitrc ----------
festival --server &
sawfish &
gnome-terminal &
exec gnome-session &
gnopernicus
--------------------
Omitting a dozen lines at the beginning and another dozen at the
end, here are the lines sent to stdout by "startx", which I hope
may be more helpful:
---------- startx output ----------

server Wed Oct 16 06:50:11 2002 : Festival server started on port 1314
The application '<unknown>' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.
exiting bridge
application finalize called
bridge exit func complete.
--------------------
So it reports that the festival was launched as a driver, but
speech initialization failed anyway. What does that mean?
And it reports some inconsistencies in the sawfish libraries
obtained with garnome 0.17.1 which I expect might not be critical
at this juncture.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
