Ok - so after some head scratching I've discovered the code is in fact
a result of using spi_base_construct - which it seems needs some fairly
substantial re-factoring to cache the BonoboObjects not only for
efficiency but pointer equivalence reasons.
I'll try and put the work in tommorow,
