If you have a .xinitrc or .xsession file in root's home directory,
getting rid of those sometimes does the trick.

Also see below, from Sun's GNOME 2.0 Beta FAQ:

Problem

How can I fix general GNOME 2.0 Beta 1 desktop problems such as the
following:

GNOME login never gets past the black screen.

Panels do not respond to my input.

       Icons do not display correctly.

       Panels do not appear.

Solution

Perform the following steps:

1.Remove the following configuration preference files and
directories:

       $HOME/.esd_auth
       $HOME/.gconf
       $HOME/.gconfd
       $HOME/.gnome
       $HOME/.gnome-desktop
       $HOME/.gnome2
       $HOME/.gnome2-private
       $HOME/.metacity
       $HOME/.nautilus
       $HOME/.themes
       $HOME/.thumbnails
       $HOME/.xscreensaver

2.Make sure that you do not have previous versions of GNOME
       listed before /opt/gnome-2.0/lib in your
       LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

     3.Kill the gconfd-2 process.

     4.Run the command: bonobo-slay.

     5.Try to log in again.
