Do you have hicolor-icon-theme installed? If so, is the installation
prefix of hicolor-icon-theme in your PATH environment variable?

I installed hicolor-icon-theme in the same prefix as the GTK+ install,
and that worked fine for me. No need to put anything in PATH.
