Perhaps I am misunderstanding something, but why can't you just do the following:
Open GIMP
Open the .pdf file
Gimp will show a PDF-Input window:
change the resolution to at least 300ppi
select only the pages that contain the images you want
(use ctrl-click to select multiple individual pages, or use the
Select range text box to input page numbers)
Click on Import
Gimp will default to opening each page as a layer.
Select the images you want [probably rectangle-select], and copy/paste as new layer
Do whatever you want with the images.
