The same effect reported as a bug, you might want to go and revive that one.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/4267 closed unresolved and assumed
the same as:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/4267  connection seems a bit tenuous.

Possibly a problem caused by some fonts Deja-Vu if you have LibreOffice
installed.  One report, fixed by removing those font files and deleting
fntcache.dat file.
