GIMP doesn’t really have any sort of photo management functionality built in (not should it in my opinion).

You could try a photo manager like digiKam.

In Lightroom I was able to have a "directory" to choose from such as Vacation 2017, or Vacation 2018.

The pictures in these folders were indexed down the left side of the screen.  Stored in a separate hard drive.

Does Gimp have a similar directory, even though the photos are stored in a separate hard drive?
