Thank you for your suggestion. Good memory though!  

Tried this, but no effect, sadly.

Hazy memory (I have not used Windows recently) but look for a 
"fontcache" directory somewhere in your "Application Data" directory 
tree. Then remove it. Next Gimp startup will take a while rebuilding
it,
looking at the existing system fonts.
