No, you didn't read it wrong. The wording is ambiguous.
What does "Adding to the mask" mean? It may be "adding more pixels to
be masked out" or the opposite.
Maybe that section of the manual needs a bit of thought about unifying
the meaning of "mask" through the different sections it is used.
