[Gimp-user] problems with imported layers

Hi,
I am new to gimp and I'd need help with this.
I imported to GIMP an image with layers which was previously created
with Adobe Photoshop Elements.
I can still see all the layers that where originally created but I can't
edit any of them when into GIMP
(and don't have access any longer to the Photoshop Elements program)

I can select the layers but can't actualy edit them
Is there any way/setting that would allow me to edit these imported layers?
