thank you guys for reporting this. It's indeed an issue.
We have filed some bugs with at least one solution proposal:

IMHO all possible solutions be checked. Perhaps we find more in this
thread.
I'm for using the keyword 'performance' for all performance related
issues in Bugzilla, so the related bugs could be fixed in one go.
My 2p for now.
