i just installed gimp 2.8.

I use gimp to open these .jp2 files sequentially?

If you just want to read the book, use an image viewer.

For example, most Linux systems have qiv, which will let you page through the images with space and (oddly)
backspace to go forward and back. Luckily, backspace doesn't delete the image :-)

If you're not using a GNU/Linux™ system (which seems likely from your mention of Irfanview) and are using a
Microsoft Windows system, say, search for a jpeg2000 viewer for Windows.
